What's a martingale collar?
A martingale is a collar with two loops. The main loop sits around the neck, and a smaller second loop holds the D ring. When your dog pulls or tries to back out, the second loop tightens slightly, gently snugging the main loop so the collar can't slip over the head. When they stop pulling, it loosens back to comfortable. It's a no choke, no escape design used widely by trainers and groomers.
Will my dog choke if they pull hard?
No. The martingale loop is sized so it tightens just enough to stop the collar slipping over the head, not enough to choke. When properly adjusted, you should be able to fit two fingers between the collar and your dog's neck even at full tension.
Is this only for walking, or can my dog wear it around the house?
Most trainers recommend martingales as walking collars rather than 24/7 wear. The loop design needs the lead's tension to work properly, and around the house your dog is best in a flat collar. For all day everyday wear, our basic nylon collar or padded neoprene collar work better.
Will it fit my Greyhound or Whippet?
Yes, this is exactly the kind of collar sighthounds need. Their narrow heads and wider necks mean regular flat collars often slip off. The martingale loop holds securely on slim necks. Greyhounds typically take M or L depending on neck size, Whippets typically S or M.
How does the lockable buckle work?
The buckle clicks shut and stays locked. To release, you press the small button in the centre. This stops the buckle popping open accidentally during a walk, which can happen with cheaper plastic side release buckles when there's pressure on the collar.
How do I clean it?
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap, rinse well, and air dry flat. Don't machine wash. The metal hardware and reflective stitching will wear faster than necessary in a washing machine.
